Special Committee on Mental Health Co-Chair Steven Leifman, a Miami-Dade County judge said the traditional legal tools for assessing and treating substance abuse and mental illness — the Marchman and Baker acts respectively — need updating if Florida is going to meet the challenges of a raging opioid epidemic and deadly mass shootings. The committee is releasing 17 recommendations in its interim report.

Supreme Court dismisses petition seeking automatic discipline for frivolous actions
A Bar-member generated rule amendment petition to provide for discipline or a disciplinary diversion when an appellate court finds a lawyer had engaged in a frivolous action has been rejected by the Supreme Court. The court on May 25 issued a short order dismissing the petition filed by 59 Bar members led by Tom and Diane Wells of Coral Gables.
